How to Select the Best Materials for Custom Labels

Hello, my name is Bobby. I run a restaurant which is located in Melbourne, Australia. When I opened the place, I was mostly worried about making sure I had ordered the right amount of food, that the staffing levels were correct and that the place was clean and tidy after the shift was over. However, what I didn't think about was the quality of the menus and posters that I needed to attract customers. Thankfully, my friend suggested that I contact a printing company that was able to print my designs to a very high standard. I was really impressed and my customers love them.

Several factors need to be considered when you are selecting the materials from which your custom labels will be made. This article discusses some things that you should bear in mind so that the material selection process is easier for you:

Container Type

You should consider the type of container on which you want to place a given custom label before you select the materials from which that label should be made. For instance, different materials will be appropriate for a squeezable bottle as compared to the labels that will be placed on a rigid material. Biostone is an example of a material that is made from stone. Such a material isn't suitable for a squeezable bottle since the label will disintegrate easily. Ask for materials meant for squeezable containers if your products require such packaging.

Lamination Needs

Label lamination serves many purposes, such as making products attractive and increasing the water resistance of the packaging. Decide whether you want your labels to be laminated or not before you select the materials from which those labels are to be made. This is because some materials aren't compatible with the lamination process while others must be laminated. Classic crest labels are an example of a material that cannot be laminated. However, gold polyester must be laminated. Other materials, such as satin cloth labels, may or may not be laminated.

Water Resistance Needs

It is also helpful to think about whether your products will be exposed to moisture or not. The label material that you select should address the water exposure needs of your products. For instance, beauty care products that will be stored in bathrooms should have water-resistant labels so that water will not damage those labels. Polypropylene is a suitable label material for such an application.

Sun Exposure

You need to select a material that will stand up to sunlight exposure if your labels will be outdoors for extended durations. Flexible vinyl is one of the strongest and most durable label materials for outdoor applications. This is unlike vellum that can be damaged by exposure to sunlight.

As you can see, each application has a number of label materials that are best suited to it. It is, therefore, prudent that you describe your application fully to the maker of custom labels. That professional will then use that information to recommend the best materials from which you can select the one that appeals to you the most.
